From Everglades necessity to Naples legend — Swamp Buggy Racing is history in motion.
Southwest Florida’s terrain—especially the Everglades—was famously difficult to navigate. Thick woods, deep bogs, and muddy wetlands made travel slow and dangerous. Locals relied on rafts and small boats just to get from one place to another.
Progress demanded innovation.
1930s–1940s
He invented a tall, unusual vehicle originally known as the “Tumble Bug.” Built to conquer swampy terrain, the machine quickly proved invaluable as development spread through Southwest Florida. It was used for everything—hunting trips, hauling supplies, and even Sunday family outings.
The swamp buggy was born.
Post–World War II
After World War II, military surplus began flooding the region. Aircraft tires, jeep parts, and heavy-duty components were quickly adapted into swamp buggies, making them stronger and more capable.
By the 1950s, the State of Florida even recognized their value—using swamp buggies in law enforcement operations across difficult terrain.
1943–1949
As swamp buggies became essential tools, more hunters and farmers began building their own. Mechanical enthusiasts gathered to trade ideas—and soon, friendly rivalries followed.
Informal races began around 1943, held on Raymond Bennett’s potato farm, famously described by Ed Frank as “the biggest hole in the vicinity of Naples.” What started as small gatherings quickly became local events.
On November 12, 1949, the first official Swamp Buggy Races were held in Naples, Florida, drawing 50 competitors and a massive crowd.
1950s–1970s
The races exploded in popularity. Dozens of competitors lined up each year, originally racing for prizes like shotguns before hunting season.
Swamp Buggy Racing gained national attention—appearing on television and attracting Hollywood stars—cementing Naples as the home of this one-of-a-kind motorsport.
1980s–Today
By the 1980s and 1990s, tractor tires replaced earlier designs, transforming swamp buggies into powerful racing machines. While no longer practical for hunting, they became perfect for adrenaline-fueled competition.
Today, Swamp Buggy Racing is a proud Naples tradition. Racers compete for thousands of dollars, crowds gather from across the country, and local, national, and worldwide celebrities continue to visit the park—helping show the world just how AWESOME this sport truly is.
